Current Loop Controller (CLC) Eases Industrial Automation Retrofits

Micronor Inc.’s (Newbury Park, CA) MR267 Current Loop Controller (CLC) option remotely controls a motorized potentiometer and/or rotary cam switch via current, voltage input, or external potentiometer.

These motorized potentiometers — which remotely control manual potentiometers based on 4- to 20-mA current loops, 0- to 2.5-V inputs, or external potentiometers — are used in a variety of industrial automation and process control applications. They are simple to use and set up and do not require computer control or software. The onboard potentiometers can either provide absolute positional feedback information, or function as the variable resistor in an analog control or bridge circuit. A motorized potentiometer provides a smooth uniform ramp throughout its timing cycle. Rotary limit switches are programmed (via the cams) to electrically control events (or provide status) at pre-set stages. Applications include ramping-up the field current of a DC motor or controlling the startup of a generator.

The CLC option can be specified for any of Micronor’s modular motorized potentiometers, cam timers, and rotary limit switches. These products are available in DIN rail mount, panel mount, open frame, light duty, and heavy duty (NEMA 4/4X) enclosures for use in a wide range of industrial automation and process control applications. The MR267 option operates on 24 VDC with an operating temperature range of -10 °C to +65 °C. Input burden is 130 Ohms max at 2.6-V and 20-mA input. The CLC has a 5-Ohm/min. reference load with a max current draw of 1 mA at 2.5 V. Position accuracy is 0.5 percent of full scale, while position resolution is 0.25 percent. A speed trimpot allows timing ranges of 5 s to 25 s.
