AI Embedded Computing Kit

congatec (San Diego, CA) and the Japanese AI experts at Hacarus recently unveiled the world’s first embedded computing kit for Artificial Intelligence (AI) that uses Sparse Modeling technology. Sparse Modeling is a data modeling approach that focuses on identifying unique characteristics, essentially interpreting data similar to the way the human brain does.

Sparse Modeling needs little training data to make highly accurate predictions. With Sparse Modeling it is possible to create a new inspection model starting with 50 or even fewer images. This is significantly less than the 1,000 or more images required for traditional AI. The Sparse Modeling Kit, available from Hacarus, can be used stand-alone or as an addon to existing inspection systems.

The new starter kit based on congatec hardware and Hacarus software can instantly be deployed and tested in any GigE and USB 3.x environment. Designed on the basis of palm sized Computer-on-Modules, the system measures 173 × 88 × 21.7 mm (6.81 × 3.46 × 0.85 in) and offers the latest Intel Atom® and Celeron® processors (Codename Apollo Lake). Standard interfaces are 2 × GbE application ready for GigE Vison, 1 × USB3.0/2.0, 4 × USB2.0 and 1 × UART (RS-232). Extensions are possible with 2 x Mini-PCIe with USIM socket, 1 × mSATA socket and 16-bit programmable GPIO. The wide range DC voltage input is 9V-32V.

Low-Viscosity Polyphenylsulfone

BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany) is expanding its Ultrason® P product range with a particularly low-viscosity grade. The new polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) Ultrason® P 2010 is characterized by improved flow behavior in injection molding while maintaining the mechanical properties of Ultrason® P. It is, therefore, possible to manufacture larger, complex-shaped components such as heat-resistant containers with sophisticated, thin-walled geometries, for aircraft applications. The tool also fills up at lower injection pressures and processing temperatures.

The new material combines the notched impact strength and stability of the already available Ultrason® P 3010 with high chemical resistance, good hot steam sterilization at 134°C and inherent fire resistance. The Charpy notched impact strength is almost ten times higher than that of other amorphous high-temperature materials. Even the combination of aggressive cleaning agents and disinfectants, water and extreme heat does not affect Ultrason® P 2010. Ultrason® P 2010 is available in transparent and opaque.

24-Channel ARINC 429 Board

United Electronic Industries (UEI) (Walpole, MA) announced the release of the DNx-429-516 ARINC 429 interface for use with UEI’s Cube and RACKtangle chassis. With 24 RX and 16 TX channels coupled to a high-performance FPGA, the board provides flexibility to record, playback, process, and test their ARINC-429 traffic. The DNx-529-516 board supports high speed (100 kHz) and low speed (12.5 kHz) operation, selectable on a channel by channel basis. The channel speed can be set to frequencies other than 100 and 12.5 kHz to support legacy devices that “push” the ARINC 429 standard.

256-word FIFOs on all channels ensure data integrity in both directions. The board includes an ARINC 429 receiver connected to each transmit channel. This allows the application to confirm the correct information has been written to the ARINC 429 bus. The TX drivers on the TX/RX channels can be disabled on a channel-by-channel basis allowing TX channels to function as RX. Channels may transmit asynchronously or based on a hardware-controlled scheduler supporting up to 256 unique schedules.
