Multi-Core Remote I/O Subsystem

Aitech Defense Systems, Inc. (Chatsworth, CA) has ported the cost-effective, open source Linux operating system onto its intelligent Ai-RIO remote I/O interface unit (RIU). This modular small form factor (SFF) RIU internally networks up to eight expansion modules – or ‘slices’ – for extremely high density and low power in a compact physical space.

The Linux-based software development kit (SDK) for the Ai-RIO facilitates easy development of applications. The Linux BSP is delivered as a Virtual Machine (VM) with the complete source code and build environment. The VM has a pre-configured TFTP server to boot the kernel and an NFS server to be used for storage and file sharing during the development. All Ai-RIO units are tested and characterized directly by Aitech for radiation effects over 25 krads (Si) TID. The dual-core, high performance, low power NXP P1020 processor was selected, since it is immune to latch-up, with other components chosen to meet the heavy ion Linear Energy Transfer threshold (LETth) of at least 37 MeV-cm2/mg for latch-up.

The modular subsystem features onboard temperature sensors as well as A/D voltage and current monitoring with built-in test (BIT) for high reliability and a base configuration weight of only 3.75 lbs with a power dissipation of less than 12W.

Hermetically Sealed Wet Tantalum Capacitors

AVX Corporation (Fountain Inn, SC) announced that several of its TWA Series axial-leaded, hermetically sealed wet electrolytic tantalum capacitors are now qualified to MIL-PRF-39006/33A. Designed to deliver high-reliability, high-CV performance in harsh-environment military, defense, avionics, and industrial applications, including satellites, DC/DC power supplies, power converters, bulk energy storage, and pulse power circuits, the new TWA M39006 Series capacitors have a cylindrical, axial-leaded case with a hermetically sealed welded tantalum can and header assembly that ruggedly withstands environmental hazards including shock, vibration, and temperatures extending from -55°C to +125°C, and a unique cathode system that provides impressively high CV/cc and stable electrical parameters.

TWA Series capacitors currently on the MIL-PRF-39006 qualified parts list (QPL) are manufactured at the AVX facility in Lanškroun, Czech Republic, and include T3 and T4 case sizes with M-level reliability (i.e., failure rates of 1% per 1,000 hours), capacitance values spanning 470–1800μF, and voltage ratings ranging from 25–75V. The TWA M39006 Series capacitors also exhibit low DC leakage (5–12μA at +25°C and 20–50μA at +85°C and +125°C) and low ESR (0.5–0.9 | max. at 120 Hz).

Simulation and Optimization Software

One of the ways NCSIMUL simulation and optimization software from Hexagon Production Software (North Kingstown, RI) helps aerospace manufacturers is by creating “digital twin” process models that facilitate fulfilment of customer demands for higher production rates and product quality as part of the Industry 4.0 environment.

NCSIMUL software works directly with ISO NC machining codes to simulate, verify and optimize machining programs based on specific parts, tooling, and machine tool characteristics. Three-dimensional graphics help prevent crashes while complex algorithms and embedded process-based knowledge enable optimization of cutting conditions. Use of the software reduces time spent debugging programs, eliminates risk of spindle collision, tool breakage and scrap, and improves cycle times, process efficiencies and machine utilization.

NCSIMUL provides machining verification in three steps: it investigates and corrects coding errors, simulates to detect collisions and correct motion errors, and validates the machining results. The software also monitors production transfers, tool management and machine status.

Vector Signal Transceivers

National Instruments (NI) (Austin, TX) announced the PXIe-5831 vector signal transceiver (VST) to further address time-to-market challenges for X-band, Ku-band and Ka-band radar and satellite communications (SATCOM) components and systems. The PXIe-5831 VST with modular millimeter wave (mmWave) heads expands the VST product family to provide frequency coverage up to 44 GHz. It delivers 1 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth for generation and analysis, and features a high-performance FPGA, so users can perform faster, optimized measurements, inline signal processing and high-speed data transfer.

The PXIe-5831 combines the PXIe-5820 baseband VST with the PXIe-3622 vector signal upconverter/downconverter for direct RF generation and analysis from 5 to 21 GHz. Modular mmWave heads further expand coverage to include frequencies from 23 to 44 GHz with integrated and calibrated switching for up to 32 channels. This enables multichannel beamformer and phased-array measurements without the need for additional infrastructure.

COM Express Type 6 Modules

congatec (San Diego, CA) recently announced 10 new COM Express Type 6 modules featuring the latest Intel embedded processor technology. The four Intel Xeon, three Intel Core, two Intel Celeron and one Intel Pentium processors are all based on the same Intel microarchitecture (code-named Coffee Lake H). This enables congatec to provide all 10 new processors on one COM Express module design – the conga-TS370.

The spearhead in terms of computing power is the 45 watt 6-core module with 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon E-2276ME processor. Particularly noteworthy are the two 6-core congatec modules with a TDP of 25 watts offered on Intel Xeon E-2276ML and Intel Core i7-9850HL processors. They enable developers to create completely passively cooled embedded edge computing systems that can run up to 12 standalone virtual machines in parallel thanks to hyperthreading. This allows operation even in fully sealed systems, under the harshest environmental conditions and with the highest IP protection. The same applies to the two quad-core modules with Intel Xeon E-2254ML or Intel Core i3-9100HL processor as well as the Intel Celeron G4932E processor-based module, all featuring a – partly configurable – TDP of 25 watts.
