Mini PCIe-Based Serial I/O Modules

Acromag (Wixom, MI) continues to expand their offering of AcroPack rugged I/O modules based on the PCI Express mini card (mPCIe) standard with a new isolated RS232 communication module. The AP513 module provides four individually isolated RS232 serial ports on a compact 30 × 70 mm board. Each port is isolated to 250V from digital circuitry and 100V from the other 3 ports. The isolation protects equipment and signal integrity in electrically noisy environments with potential for high common model voltages, harmful transient signals, and ground loops.

Designed for COTS applications, these mPCIe mezzanine modules deliver a SWaP-optimized solution for military, aerospace, and industrial systems performing data collection, control, test, and simulation functions. A variety of carrier cards are available to host a mix of up to four AcroPack I/O modules on PCI Express, VPX, CompactPCI-Serial, or other small form factor computer platforms.

UV-Curable Epoxies

John P Kummer (Marlborough, UK) launched new UV-curable epoxies for dam and fill processes in the UK aerospace industries. The “dam & fill” process with two materials is mainly used in cases where a component needs to be protected with either an opticallytransparent or opaque encapsulant, or if a conventional glob-top material is too viscous to flow around and underneath fine wires. Optically transparent encapsulants usually have a low viscosity. A dam is therefore applied around the component first to prevent the potting material from flowing over the substrate.

Epo-Tek OG116-31 is a UV-curable epoxy. Due to its thixotropic nature, it is often used as a dam. It can be cured with UV-light in a very short time. Afterwards the encapsulant - either also a UV-cure or a thermoset material - can be applied. Whilst OG142-87 is typically used for a UV fill, both products have a high glass transition temperature (Tg >100°C). Both OG116-31 and OG142-87 are cationic products. Ionic polymerization is initiated by photo-generated ions. The cure process continues until all polymers are consumed.
