Microstepping Motor Driver

US Digital (Vancouver, WA) announced the release of the MD3 Programmable Microstepping Motor Driver, capable of driving motors from NEMA size 14 to 42. The MD3 accepts 9-50 VDC power inputs and is rated for currents up to 7A continuous duty. In addition to digital input controls, the MD3 can be configured and controlled using the open MODBUS RTU protocol over a RS485 bus. A GUI application is supplied that allows many settings to be changed including the number of microsteps per full step, acceleration/deceleration rates, speed and current cutback. The design supports multiple MD3 units on the same RS485 bus and allows for programmable motion profiles. In addition, the MD3 has a brushed DC motor speed control mode.

Blast Resistant Data Recorder

The miniature SLICE HG data acquisition system from DTS (Seal Beach, CA) captures physical signals in dynamic environments like blast and ordnance evaluation. Targeted at applications with size or mass constraints, SLICE HG's 31.75 mm diameter size makes it easy to embed the data recorder directly in or on most test articles. The rugged aluminum housing is impervious to shock up to 20,000 g.

The 3-channel SLICE HG features onboard signal conditioning and supports a variety of external sensors including piezo-resistive accelerometers. Data direct-writes to 16 GB internal flash memory and stores up to four hours of data at the maximum 500k sps/channel sampling rate.

GaN MMIC Low Noise Amplifiers

Custom MMIC (Chelmsford, MA) has added three new GaN low noise amplifiers (LNAs) to its GaAs and GaN MMIC portfolio. The CMD276C4, CMD277C4 and CMD278C4 GaN MMIC LNAs deliver high linearity performance with output IP3 of +32dBm while offering high input power handling of 5W. The high input power handling feature enables system designers to avoid limiters and other protection networks, while still achieving extremely low noise figures over the operating bandwidth. These new MMIC LNAs are housed in a leadless 4×4 mm QFN package.

The CMD276C4 is a 2.6 to 4 GHz (S Band) LNA delivering greater than 14 dB of gain with a corresponding output 1 dB compression point of +25.5 dBm and a noise figure of 1.2 dB. The CMD277C4 is a 5 to 7 GHz (C Band) LNA with 20 dB of gain, output 1 dB compression point of +26.5 dBm and a noise figure of 1.2 dB. The CMD278C4 is a broadband 8-12 GHz (X Band) LNA with 15 dB of gain, output 1 dB compression point of +28 dBm and a noise figure of 1.8 dB.

FPGA Boards With High Density RF Connectors

Annapolis Micro Systems (Annapolis, MD) and TE Connectivity (TE) (Berwyn, PA) have announced new high-performance FPGA boards that feature the NanoRF module. The half-size NanoRF is designed to fit into the VITA 67.3 form factor and supports 70 GHz bandwidth, with more than double the RF contact density of existing VITA 67 solutions. The COTS boards integrate up to two Xilinx Virtex® UltraScale+ FPGAs and a Xilinx Zynq® UltraScale+ MPSoC motherboard controller. Each board also has one (3U) or two (6U) WILD FMC+ (WFMC+) next generation I/O site(s), for dense, high-bandwidth ADCs and/or DACs.

Eliminating the need for front panel coaxial cables, the NanoRF design leverages the alignment features of optical (VITA 66) modules. A floating insert on the backplane pre-aligns the RF contact array before the contacts start to engage. This rugged precision alignment is critical in blindmate plug-in architecture, which requires high reliability under extreme conditions.
