Clean Sky Open Rotor Engine Components

GKN Aerospace has delivered the two rotating frames for a major research program exploring open rotor aero-engine designs with a goal of achieving a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Open Rotor engine project is part of the Clean Sky Sustainable and Green Engines (SAGE) program, a 50% European Union-funded, multi-partner activity aimed at lowering fuel consumption and emissions through more efficient aero-engine architectures.

Analog-to-Digital Converter

The new EV12AD550 1.5GSps ADC from e2v (Chelmsford, UK) supports high dynamic range at 4.5GHz and S-band direct digitization, which enables space systems to avoid costly down conversion requirements. Future Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Earth observation systems, for example, will be able to operate this ADC at up to 5.5GHz without the need for down conversion. The removal of down conversion stages reduces the weight, size and power consumption of the overall space system, helping to reduce expensive orbit costs.

Victrex (West Conshohocken, PA) launched a new line of PAEK-based composites for the aerospace industry in the form of unidirectional (UD) tape and laminate panels. Introduced under the brand VICTREX® AE250 composites, the new product group enables the production of continuously- reinforced components that can perform under load. Such components include brackets, clips, clamps, and housings used throughout the aircraft in primary and secondary structures.

Rugged Data Recorders

DTS (Seal Beach, CA) has released SLICE HG, a new standalone 3-channel system; 31.75 mm in diameter × 42.52 mm; 20,000 g shock-rated; programmable bandwidth DC to 40 KHz; with adjustable sampling 10 to 500,000 sps/ch. Data direct-writes to 16 GB flash memory, which can store >4 hours at the max sampling rate. The small potted aluminum enclosure is designed to be embedded in the test article, which also helps improve data quality. Sensor support includes: bridge, MEMS, strain, IEPE, load and temperature sensors.

Gaia Converter (Laval, QC, Canada) has extended its ultra-wide input voltage range DC/DC Converters platform to the new High Rel MGDD-08 series, targeting military and airborne applications. The MGDD-08 Series 9-60V & 80V transient input voltage range complies with Mil-Std-1275, 704 or DO-160 standards without an additional front end protection device. This unique performance is achieved via Gaia’s proprietary switching techniques while also keeping efficiency over 90%. With 2 outputs (for parallel, serial or symmetrical operation) of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V and 24V, they can cover a wide variety of needs such as single 3.3V to 48V output, +&- 15V or 2×24V outputs for example.

Concurrent Technologies (Woburn, MA) recently announced FR 341/x06, a new 3U VPX™ ExpressFabric® switch. FR 341/x06 supports six payload boards and is based around an Avago Technologies PEX9700 series device which is fully Gen 3 PCI Express® compatible with additional ExpressFabric capability. Similar to Concurrent Technologies’ existing FR 331/x06 3U VPX switch, it provides PCI Express data and Ethernet control plane links but with higher performance and more flexible configurations.

Waveguide Mixer

Anritsu Company (Richardson, TX) has introduced the MA2806A High Performance Waveguide Mixer that can be integrated with its MS2830A Spectrum/Signal Analyzer to create a millimeter-wave (mmWave) measurement solution. When used with the MS2830A-044/045 models, the MA2806A supports spectrum mask measurements of the V band (50-75 GHz) to accurately determine characteristics of ultra-wideband signals. P1dB performance of better than 0 dBm as well as minimum sensitivity performance of -150 dBm/Hz (meas) can be achieved. Design, manufacture, and QA engineers can now measure extremely weak signals at V band frequencies that are typically missed by conventional measurement systems.

Precision Assembly of Systems on Surfaces (PASS)

Chemiresistors represent a powerful class of chemical sensors that can be readily integrated into any electrical system, can be miniaturized, are readily multiplexed, and take nearly zero-power to operate. One of the greatest limitations to these sensors is a lack of selectivity, which is the electronic equivalent of noise. Interference from large varying background signals, such as humidity, can compromise the sensor signal to a point where there is no useful data. To address this challenge, new ways to integrate molecular constructs into carbon nanotube compositions that produce enhanced selectivity to certain molecules or classes of molecules were investigated to increase the signal to noise level in chemical sensors.
