Vertical Take-Off and Landing UAV

The Air Force has announced that the MLB V-Bat Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) UAV from the MLB Company (Sunnyvale, CA) has been selected for a Phase II SBIR award. The military branch seeks a vehicle that has an 8-ft wingspan, 10-hour endurance, 55-lb gross take-off weight, and 70-mph cruise speed. The V-Bat’s combination of VTOL operational convenience with the safety of a shrouded fan and fixed-wing duration in a small UAV system will enable local situational awareness for UAV operations in confined areas. Last year, under a DARPA contract, MLB demonstrated precise emplacement of small payloads from the V-Bat, operating in hover mode under a vision-based control system.

Electronics Authentication Program

To deal with the crisis of counterfeit electronics flooding into the US defensesupply chain, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), a procurement and supply arm of the U.S. Department of Defense, is considering a mandate requiring defense contractors to use the authentication services of Stony Brook, NY-based Applied DNA Sciences (APDN). If a mandate goes into effect, DLA would require contractors to implement APDN’s SigNature® DNA marking program for microcircuits provided to the military. Defense contractors would have to prove that their microcircuits are marked with SigNature DNA.

Mixed-Signal Cards

BEEcube (Fremont, CA) offers six ADC and DAC cards for wireless applications. The cards have VITA-57 FMC-HPC form factor and are pluggable in any of BEEcube’s products. The FMC104 ADC and FMC105 DAC are singlechannel, ultra-wideband (0.1 to 2.5 GHz) FMC cards with up to 5 GSPS sampling rate, and 10- and 12-bit resolution, respectively, for applications wireless microwave backhaul links working on the E-band radio frequencies. The FMC106 ADC and FMC107 RF-DAC are quadchannel, wideband FMC cards with up to 500 and 1500 MSPS sampling rate, and 14- and 16-bit resolution, respectively, for Wi-Fi MIMO systems working on the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands with 4 to 16 antennas. The FMC108 ADC and FMC109 RF-DAC are dual-channel, ultra-wideband (0.1 to 2 GHz) FMC cards with high resolution (12- and 14-bit, respectively) and up to 4 and 5.6 GSPS sampling rates in interleave and I/Q mode, for LTE-Advanced next-generation radio units.

Sheet Antenna

Pulse Electronics Corp. (San Diego, CA) has introduced a near-field communications (NFC) antenna that enables mobile phones to read data from a distance of up to 40 mm. The ferrite sheet antenna sends and receives clear signals even when installed in a handset in close proximity to the battery or metal housing. It measures 35 x 50 mm with a minimum thickness of 0.30 mm, including the ferrite/adhesive/antenna flex layers. The magnetic field strength can be optimized by the type and thickness of the ferrite material and the design of the radiator pattern. The antenna meets EMVco specifications for global interoperability and compatibility of chip-based payment cards and acceptance devices. The antenna is RoHS-compliant and comes packaged in trays in a variety of sizes.

(San Diego, CA) offers the HaRP™ SPDT PE42422 RF switch that provides linearity of 115 dBm IIP2, and 70 dBm IIP3, low insertion loss of 0.4 dB @ 3 GHz, and high isolation of 28 dB @ 3 GHz. The switch covers a frequency range of 100 MHz – 6 GHz and, using a nominal +3V power supply voltage, a typical input 0.1 dB compression point of +36 dBm can be achieved.
