Helmet Lights

FoxFury (Vista, CA) has introduced new side-worn helmet lights that attach to Special Ops, EMS and Flight helmets via the side mounting screw or industrial Velcro. These TX helmet lights are available with either white or multi-colored LEDs and offer a breakaway design to prevent the user from becoming entangled, reducing risk of injury. These lights also feature a Quick Tilt and Spin capability to aim the light where needed. The TX-0 Multi-Color Special Ops Helmet Light (P/N 600-404) features 1 each Red, White, Blue and IR LED (4 Modes). Pressure Transducers

Meggitt Sensing Systems (San Juan Capistrano) has introduced the Endevco® model 8530C series of high-sensitivity piezoresistive absolute pressure transducers, offering high output and a non-linearity of 1% at 3x over-range in a highly compact (3.86 mm face diameter) package. Offered in ranges of 15, 50 and 100 psia with 225 mV full scale output and high resonant frequencies of 180 kHz (15 psia), 320 kHz (50 psia) and 500 kHz (100 psia), the Endevco® model 8530C series features an active four-arm strain gage bridge, diffused into a sculpted silicon diaphragm. The volume behind the diaphragm is both evacuated and glass sealed to provide an absolute pressure reference. The transducers also feature integral temperature compensation, providing stable performance over a temperature range of -18°C to +93°C (0°F to +200°F). Units are supplied with an integral cable, with custom lengths available upon request. A 10-32 UNF-2A mounting thread is standard, with an integral four-pin connector available with the “M37” option.

DC-DC Converters

TDK-Lambda Americas (San Diego, CA) has introduced the new DPX Series DIN-rail mounted DC-DC converters. Available with both 2:1 and 4:1 input voltage ranges covering from 9.5V to 75V, with 40 to 60W output ratings, this new series provides an economical solution for industrial and commercial applications such as process control, factory automation, test & measurement, and alarm and security systems. The DPX models are available with single, dual or triple outputs. The single output models are available with an output voltage of 5V, 12V or 15V and the dual-output models have +/-12V or +/-15V outputs. The triple-output models provide a +5V main with either +/-12V or +/-15V outputs. The single output models can be adjusted +/-10% of its nominal output via a front-panel mounted potentiometer. The DPX Series of DC-DC converters are enclosed in a rugged metal case and can be mounted on either a TS35/7.5 or TS35/15 standard DIN rail. Typical operating efficiencies are up to 86%.

Line Driver

Holt Integrated Circuits (Mission Viejo, CA) has introduced the HI-8596 line driver that automatically generates all ARINC 429 voltage levels on-chip, eliminating the need for negative voltage supplies or inverters typically found in ARINC 429 bus driver designs. The HI-8596 operates from a single +3.3V supply using four external capacitors. The device also features high-impedance outputs (tri-state) when both data inputs are taken high, enabling multiple line drivers to be connected to a common bus. Different outputs are available for implementation of external lightning protection, allowing the requirements of DO-160F, Level 3, waveforms 3, 4, 5A and 5B to be satisfied. The HI-8596 is available in compact 16-pin SOIC and QFN packages.

High-Reliability Connectors

Omnetics Connector Corp. (Minneapolis, MN) has announced the Latching-Bi-Lobe, is a Nano-D-shaped metal connector assembly with multiple pins and sockets set on 25 mil (.635 mm) pitch that matches the performance in military specification MIL-DTL-32139. The positive latching process mates and de-mates when needed for quick change-over of instrumentation. These latches require no tools. The connectors utilize the company’s rugged Flex Pin contact system. They are capable of carrying 1 amp per contact. Available in pin counts from 9 to 65, latching Bi-Lobes® can be configured with discrete wires, overmolded cable, panel mount housings, and PCB-mounted versions.

Multi-Function MIL-STD-1553 Cards

Data Device Corp. (Bohemia, NY) has introduced the BU-672 Series PMC, PCI, cPCI/PXI, and PCI Express MIL-STD-1553 cards designed around its AceXtreme™ 1553 core. The cards add multi-function capability, allowing a 1553 Bus Controller (BC), up to 31 Remote Terminals (RT), and Bus Monitor (MT) to run concurrently per channel. The cards are available with up to four dual-redundant 1553 channels. The cards also include a Test and Simulation Toolkit that delivers advanced hardware and software utilities. Enhanced test features include: reconstruction (replay) mode, allowing users to record 1553 data and replay it onto the bus in real time; error injection; variable amplitude (PCI-Express only); and low inter-message gap support, providing advanced testing for out-of-bounds responses. The cards utilize a common API that can be used for test/embedded cards and components, so that software developed for any DDC 1553 solution can be easily reused in all other applications without software programming.

ARM-Based 32-Bit MCUs

STMicroelectronics (Geneva, Switzerland) has announced that the roadmap for its breakthrough STM32 family of 32-bit MCUs based on ARM® Cortex-MT processor cores will include new devices centered on the Cortex-M4 and the Cortex-M0 cores from ARM. In addition, ST also announced the availability of its new STM32 F-2 series MCUs that unleash the performance of the Cortex-M3 core. The Cortex-M4 from ARM is an upwardly compatible version of the Cortex-M3, offering DSP instructions and a Floating Point Unit (FPU). The core will be used in new high-performance variants of STM32 products to be sampled in 2011. ST's new STM32 F-2 microcontroller series combines ST's advanced 90nm process technology with the company's innovative Adaptive Real-Time memory accelerator (ART AcceleratorT) to unleash the Cortex-M3 core's maximum processing performance.

Gas Flow Pulsers

InterTech Development (Skokie, IL) has introduced MicroPulseTM, an alternative to mechanical syringes for producing small, short pulses of various gases. The solid-state unit measures 145 × 52 × 35 mm and contains a miniature heat exchanger and temperature control that can be fitted into process control circuits without adding volume. The unit delivers gases up to 1.75 scc/m at STP. The required flow during the pulse period is automatically controlled via an 8-bit digital interface by a PLC or other external controller. The user can pre-set flow direction, volume-flow, or mass-flow pulses over a wide temperature range. The system uses no moving parts, pneumatic valves, or small orifices, and does not require a compressed-air source. Multiple different flow values can be produced in quick succession as required.

Synthesis of Long-Chain-Branched (LCB) Polysulfones for Multifunctional Transport Membranes

Increasing numbers of technologies are based on the idea of harnessing charge transport for useful processes such as energy harvesting, actuation, and sensing. Although much progress exists based on perfluorosulfonated platforms, new and more complicated parameters arise as applications require multifunctionality in engineering materials. For instance, in addition to using lightweight, durable, stable, high-conductivity proton-exchange membranes in a fuel cell, it may be desirable to have the energy source bear load and operate as a structural installment. The most prevalent class of materials potentially capable of such a tradeoff is rubbery “salt-in-polymer” electrolytes that employ polymer segmental motion for transport of free ions from co-dissolved salts.

Biodegradable MEMS Based on Cellulose Paper

Electro-Active Paper(EAPap) has been recognized as a new smart material that can be used for sensors, actuators, biomimetic robots, and smart wallpapers. EAPap is made with cellulose paper by coating thin electrodes on both sides of it. This paper can produce a bending or longitudinal strain in the presence of an electric field. Also, it can produce an induced charge under the external stress. This EAPap material has many advantages in terms of large displacement output, low actuation voltage, low power consumption, dryness, flexibility, sensing capability, and biodegradable characteristics.

Functionalized Silk Materials

T he goal of this work was to exploit the novel structural, physical, and biological features of silk proteins towards functionalization of materials systems generated from this family of protein. A new generation of functional silk systems is sought to provide novel materials with precise control of material features. Three main directions were planned: (a) protein chimeras to form organic (silk) – inorganic nanocomposites; (b) formation of electronic materials using a similar design strategy, but based on enzymatic coupling reactions to form conducting polymers; and (c) continuing to understand and exploit novel processing approaches with these proteins towards new functional materials systems.
