Armor Kits for Heavy Trucks

Over the last several years, the Army has initiated and implemented a Long Term Armor Strategy (LTAS). The LTAS provides modular armor protection for vehicles that vary dependent upon threat levels. The B-Kit consists of both transparent armor and opaque armor and provides a higher level of protection for the troops. They can be readily stored, applied, or removed by troops in the field per mission requirements.

F-16 Full Mission Trainers

L-3 Communications announced that its Link Simulation & Training (L-3 Link) division has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright- Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. The company will build two F-16 Block 52 Full Mission Trainers (FMTs) for the Iraqi Air Force.

High-Resolution, Measurement-Based, Phase-Resolved Prediction of Ocean Wavefields

Given remote and direct physical measurements of a realistic ocean wavefield, the goal of this work was to obtain a high-resolution description of the wavefield by integrating the measurements with phase-resolved wave prediction models including realistic environmental effects such as wind forcing and wave breaking dissipation. The measurements necessary for achieving this reconstruction were guided, and the validity, accuracy, and limitations of such wavefield reconstructions were addressed.

Measuring Impact Damage to Toughened CFRP Laminates with Time Domain Reflectometry

Laminated Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites are very effective in weight saving in aeronautical structural components. For these laminated CFRP structures, it is difficult to detect damage such as delamination, matrix cracks, and local fiber breakages caused by low-velocity impact loading because these damages are difficult to detect from the outside of the structure. This difficulty of inspection of the laminated CFRP structures demands the development of automatic monitoring or damage detection systems.

Testing Mechanical Properties of Polymer-Based Multi- Phase Particulate Composites

Polymer composites comprised of metallic particles distributed throughout a contiguous polymer matrix can often be modified to produce advanced composites that exhibit multifunctional characteristics. The properties of the particulate composites often depend on varying particle size, loading fractions, particle type, and the adhesion between the particulate and the matrix. Studies have shown that particle size, shape, and concentration, and properties of the constituents can affect mechanical properties. This work compared aluminum and nickel particles in PMMA thermoplastic prepared by injection molding, with the same particles in epoxy prepared in a cast-cure process.

3U VPX Ethernet Switches and Routers

Extreme Engineering Solutions, Inc. (X-ES) (Middleton, WI) has introduced the XChange3013 and XChange3018 3U VPX switches and routers. The XChange3018 is the first VPX Ethernet switch to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet using the 10GBASE-T protocol, eliminating the need for 10 Gigabit optical transceivers. The XChange3013 and XChange3018 both deliver full wire speed across all of their ports and jumbo packets up to 13 KB. They also support IPv6, Quality of Service (QoS), Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), and a comprehensive set of IETF RFCs and IEEE protocols. Recording System Simulator

Pentek, Inc. (Upper Saddle River, NJ) has announced the SystemFlow Simulator for its Talon(R) analog and digital recording systems. The SystemFlow Simulator includes a virtual recorder server application that simulates disk and I/O transactions for a complete and realistic recording environment. Using either the standard SystemFlow graphical user interface (GUI) or the SystemFlow application programming interface (API), the virtual server provides live, interactive operation for training or development. The common user interface (UI) and API provides a simple transition from one Talon recorder to another. The SystemFlow Simulator demonstrates actual Configuration, Record, Playback and Status screens of the standard GUI, each with intuitive controls and indicators. The SystemFlow Signal Viewer includes a virtual oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer for signal monitoring in both time and frequency domains.

Photo-Etched Lead Frames

Photofabrication Engineering (PEI) (Milford, MA) has expanded its manufacturing capabilities for custom-designed, photochemically-etched surface-mount and insert-mount lead frames for integrated circuit manufacturing. These lead frames are used in a variety of applications including semiconductors, glass-to-metal seals, and relays, as well as medical applicationss. Using base materials such as kovar, nickel-iron alloys, copper alloys, and pure nickel, PEI can plate lead frames in their entirety or selectively. Lead-free plating materials include silver, nickel, gold, or tin. PEI’s lead frames range in thickness from 0.5 mil [0.0127 mm] to 40 mil [1.575 mm], with features as small as 4 mil [0.10 mm] on 0.010 in. [0.254 mm] centers, creating lead frames that are strong enough to be handled yet flexible enough to allow bending when necessary.
